alright hip, you win

My running career is on a hiatus.

For now.

The hip pain I previously mentioned has been off and on and I've mostly been able to run through it, until Sunday when I just couldn't.  Even after days of not running. It's really disappointing and frustrating and I know things could be way worse...blah blah blah don't mean to make this super dramatic...but it's tough to see runners out on beautiful days like today and, oh, every other day I haven't been able to run. I have a doctor's appointment today to get the ball rolling on fixing this.  I want to be better by July so I can start training for a fall marathon.

Until then...

In about 6 weeks, I'll be selling tickets to my gun show. Proceeds go towards my english bulldog fund.

marathon or BUST

Well the marathon didn't go exactly as planned, to say the least. Occasionally on previous runs, I would have breathing problems that would cause me to stop running while I attempted to regain my breath. It was like a mix of hyperventilating and not being able to breathe. Maybe throw in some nausea and dizziness for added effect. It happened on 3 runs but subsequent runs were a-ok.

Enter the Pittsburgh Marathon. Of course I was feeling nervous about the run. But the morning of, my nerves were turning over to excitement. We started the run fine enough but maybe about a mile in I felt the breathing problems coming on. We moved over to the side of the road so I could regain my breath, and continued on. Only, it happened again a short while later. Someone was kind enough to come over and talk me through breathing...in through your nose, out through your mouth...and we continued on. Then around mile 4 I could feel it coming on again, reached for my dad's arm, and the next thing I knew I was on the ground. Apparently I passed out in my dad's arms and he hit me on the back to wake me up. Another runner helped my dad carry me to a nearby ambulance, where EMTs checked my vitals (all okay) and helped me calm down. Needless to say, I wasn't going to finish the race.

Once I was released from the ambulance, my dad and I made the walk back to our hotel. I was frustrated and disappointed. Frustrated that I couldn't will my body to complete the race. Disappointed that I couldn't complete something I was so mentally and physically invested in. At one point I removed my number bib from my shirt and ripped it up before tossing it in the trash. The rain didn't help. It's hard to think that I essentially failed at something I had been training for so long for. Hell, I partially created this blog to help me through the training process! I think you get the idea..

But through all of this disappointment and frustration I can't help but be thankful that I am okay. And thankful that my dad was with me when it happened. And that there were runners kind enough to stop running their own marathon and help me (looking back, I can't positively say I would have done the same thing, though I would like to think I would...). But I can't let myself associate running with disappointment, or even fear. I'm going to get this breathing thing sorted out. I'm going to get back to running. I'm going to run another marathon.

now here are some baby ducks that made me smile on that day:

a case of the mondays

Today's lunch was supposed to be good. Peanut butter and banana on a plain bagel. Harmless, yet delicious. Right?

Photo

Monday said WRONG!
BUT HOW!? cried jessie

the bagel was perfectly toasted..

the banana was sweet and ripe..

the peanut butter was creamy and melty..

Photo
But see those brown specks?

Onion.
Gross.

Monday was also like: i'm going to give you a nightmare where something evil and knife-yielding crawls out of your bellybutton, turn off your alarm so you can't get up early to run, put a run in two pairs of your tights, and make it so windy, your skirt will blow up for all of capitol hill to see!! Take that!

Inclement Weather

I love the potential for inclement weather.

I love looking at my weather.com app and seeing the notification above the "severe" tab indicating that there is, in fact, inclement weather headed my way. I love even more when the app follows through and there's a thunderstorm in February (and luckily no tornado).. and sitting in a starbucks during said thunderstorm, doing a new york times crossword..

Of course, all this love goes right out the window when I have to walk home in the pouring rain. And who likes when a bus drives by and splashes you like in the movies?? Not me.

Punkin - 2...

...things that come into contact with my car that shouldn't - 0 !

It's usually never a good thing when you get a phone call that start's out "so uh..."
I got one of those yesterday.
Turns out a drunk driver hit Eric's parked car, which was parked in front of my car...and his car subsequently backed into mine. His car apparently had been moved there just 20 minutes beforehand, and if it hadn't been there, Punkin would have been blown to smithereens. Fortunately, his car is probably a little more substantial than mine and was not blown to smithereens. And of course, it's very fortunate that no one was injured by the drunk driver. Unfortunately, his car is not currently drive-able. Mine, on the other hand, came away with nary a scratch. Just like the time I hit a deer (rather, the deer hit..me..) and Punkin ended up with just a small dent. She's pretty resilient. It was all just a giant pain to deal with on a Saturday night.

hey punkin. lookin good

but there's nothing like a beautiful sunset to make everything better.
I love sunsets.

ice is back

As a result of last night's wintry mix
I slid the majority of the way to work.
See that ice?? It was everywhere!
Treacherous i tell you.
It, along with the slush, gave me reason
to wear my new boots
(not that i need a reason!...)
but i ran into this man taking pictures of a hawk
that we thought was hurt and unable to fly.
it was really unbelievable to be so close to it.
SO unbelieveable that i took pictures of him
taking pictures of the hawk,
rather than pictures of the hawk itself...
-----
Also, I mentioned in a previous post
that our bathroom light was out.
It still is.
And i'm getting tired of brushing my teeth
and showering by light of my headlamp...
fingers crossed for tomorrow
